Five Zips Named All-MAC for Football

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Akron football had five players earn Mid-American Conference postseason accolades as junior DL CJ Nunnally, IV (Douglasville, Ga.) garnered First-Team All-MAC Defensive accolades followed by sophomore WR Jasaiah Gathings (Statesville, N.C.), senior WR Daniel George (Fort Washington, Md.), sophomore LB Bryan McCoy (Chicago, Ill.) and senior S KJ Martin (Charleston, W.Va.) with All-MAC honors, the league announced on Wednesday.
In 12 games played this season, Nunnally finished regular season play ranked second in the MAC in tackles for loss (15.5) for a total of 69 yards of loss, posting 10.5 TFL in league play. In addition, he ranked fifth in the MAC with seven sacks for 44 yards of loss and four sacks coming in conference games. On the national landscape, Nunnally ranks 19th overall in tackles for loss (1.3 per game) and 48th in sacks (0.58 per game). He led Akron in both categories, ranking fourth on the team in total tackles (65), including a third-best 35 solo takedowns. He added eight QB hurries, two pass break-ups and one forced fumble. Nunnally registered a season-best three tackles for loss and two sacks against Morgan State and Buffalo.
Landing on Second-Team All-MAC Offensive team were Gathings and George, both playing in all 12 games.
Gathings led Akron's receiving corps with 55 receptions and 575 yards for an average of 47.9 yards per game and 10.5 yards per reception. He caught one touchdown pass and had a season-long 39-yard reception against Morgan State. In addition, he posted a season-best 103-yard receiving effort on nine receptions and a touchdown against Kent State to help secure the Wagon Wheel. Gathings ranks eighth in the MAC in average yards per game and 72nd in the NCAA for receptions per game (4.6).
George hauled in a second-best 52 passes for 529 yards and a 44.1 yards per game average with a 10.2 average per catch. He also registered one touchdown and tallied a season-long 50-yard reception against Temple. In addition, he posted a season-best 104-yard receiving effort on nine receptions and a touchdown against Kent State to help secure the Wagon Wheel. George finished the season ranked 11th in the MAC in average yards per game and 88th in the NCAA for receptions per game (4.3).
Rounding out the all-league performers for Akron were McCoy and Martin, both earning Third-Team All-MAC Defensive team honors.
McCoy paced the Zips defense with a team-high 95 tackles, including 33 solo stops. He recorded six tackles for 18 yards of loss and one seven-yard sack. He also forced a fumble and recovered a fumble for a 13-yard return and the go-ahead touchdown over Morgan State. McCoy finished the season ranked seventh overall in tackles with 7.9 per game and 14th in MAC-only play (7.3 per game).
Martin posted 45 tackles and 16 solo takedowns. He registered a second-best six pass break-ups and tied the team-lead with two interceptions to finish the season ranked 11th overall in the MAC. With the pair of interceptions, he collected a team-high 88 return yards and averaged 44.0 yards per takeaway, posting a 64-yard long pick-off return against Morgan State. Martin finished the season ranked 11th in passes defended (6 break-ups, 2 INT) and 14th overall in interceptions (2).
