Volleyball to Close Out Season Against Buffalo

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron volleyball team will close out the 2023 season at home on Wednesday evening against Buffalo for Fan Appreciation Night.

The Zips (13-15, 8-9 MAC) will host the Bulls (22-7, 12-5 MAC) to finish MAC play for the year at James A. Rhodes Arena. The match will begin at 6 p.m.

ABOUT THE ZIPS
Akron is coming off a weekend series sweep over Miami on Friday and Saturday. The Zips came back from a two-set deficient on Friday evening to win in five sets (19-25, 24-26, 25-20, 27-25, 16-14). Saturday was a three-set sweep (25-16, 25-10, 25-14). Lauren Baker had a team-high 29 kills on the weekend while Faith Johnson added 24 kills and 7 blocks to help Akron from the front line. Karleighana Jones was also a key factor up front with 11 blocks. Ellen Kinnaird was an overall factor for Akron, totaling 16 kills on a .313 hitting percentage, 4 aces, and 8 blocks against the RedHawks. Her season hitting percentage of .335 is the sixth highest in the MAC. Both Kinnaird (7th) and Jones (8th) rank in the top ten for blocks per set. Eliska Vytiskova totaled 72 assists on the weekend and is now only 23 assists from the 1,000 career assists mark as a freshman as she is averaging the fourth most assists per set in the conference at 9.04. Akron continues to be the best performing team in the conference for service aces, averaging just under two per set. Individually Vanessa Del Real (3rd, .45), Vytiskova (4th, .44) and Johnson (9th, .31) rank in the top ten.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
Buffalo has clinched a spot in the Mid-American Conference Volleyball Tournament this weekend, but is heading into the final game against Akron after two straight losses at Bowling Green. Despite the loss, as a team, the Bulls are second in the MAC in points (17.41 per set), hitting percentage (.268), assists (12.75 per set), kills (13.69 per set), and service aces (1.86 per set). Courtney Okwara and Abby Leigh are first and third in the conference in hitting percentage, with Okwara at an impressive .450. Katrin Trebichavska has 58 aces in 105 sets to have the highest marks in the MAC. The Bulls are the only other team besides Akron in the conference with three players in the top ten for average aces per set – Trebichavska (1st, .55), Leigh (6th, .37), and Julianna Lopez (10th, .31)
