Dawson Hits Seven Three-Pointers In Akron's 114-56 Win Against Heidelberg

AKRON, Ohio -Â Mikal Dawson hit seven 3-pointers and totaled 25 points as the Akron men's basketball team took down the Heidelberg Student Princes 114-56 at home Tuesday.
Dawson's 25-point effort led the Zips (3-0). Enrique Freeman helped out with a double-double of 10 points and 17 rebounds and Kaleb Thornton chipped in with 11 points, nine assists, and four steals coming off the bench.
Led by Freeman's seven offensive rebounds, Akron did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 17 boards that resulted in 22 second-chance points.
Seven Zips scored in double figures. Sammy Hunter, Tavari Johnson, Shammah Scott and Amani Lyles joined Dawson, Freeman and Thornton in double figures.
The Akron defense held Heidelberg shooters to just 33.8 percent from the field, including 23.3 percent from three-point range.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 49-17 advantage, Akron went on a 16-0 run with 6:33 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Shammah Scott, to increase its lead to 65-17. The Zips then lost some of that lead but still entered halftime with a 65-19 advantage. Akron relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down 14 shots to account for 42 of its 65 points.
Akron kept its lead intact before going on a 10-0 run to grow the lead to 92-37 with 9:20 to go in the contest. The Zips kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 114-56 win. Akron took care of business in the paint, recording 26 of its 49 points in the lane.
Game Notes
- Freeman notched his second double-double of the season.
- Freeman is eight rebounds away from recording 1,000 rebounds in his career. He'd be just the sixth player in program history to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds as a Zip.
- Dawson set a career-high in scoring with 25 points. He bested his previous high of 19 that he set at South Dakota State.
- Akron is now tied for the best start in program history with its 3-0 start in its Div. I history. The 2015-16 team went 3-0 to start the season and ended up going 13-2 over its first 15 games.
- The Akron bench came alive by adding 70 points to its scoring output.
- Seven Akron players scored 10 or more points.
- The last time Akron had seven players score in double figures was on December 7, 2005, when it beat Dennison
- The Zips shot well from three-point range, knocking down 20 of 43 long-range attempts.
