Brisco, Mahaffey and Young to Join Akron Basketball in 2024-25

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's basketball program announced the addition of Rich Brisco, Eric Mahaffey and Sharron Young to the Akron Basketball family. All three student-athletes signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Zips during the 2024-2025 season, head coach John Groce announced.
 

"We are extremely excited about this signing class," said coach Groce. "All three of these student-athletes come from winning programs and exemplify what it means to be an 'Akron Guy.'"

Rich Brisco (Brooklyn, N.Y.) is a 6'8'' forward who most recently won the State Championship at Roselle Catholic in 2023. Currently playing at Hillcrest Prep in Arizona, Brisco also played for the Albany City Rocks on  the Nike EYBL circuit.

"Rich never stops competing. He plays with grit and is a high-level athlete. He'll bring a championship mindset to our program."
 

Eric Mahaffey (Cincinnati, Ohio) is a 6'4'' guard who plays for Archbishop Moeller HS. Mahaffey shot over 51 percent from the field and averaged 2.4 rebounds per game in 2022-23. 

"What excited me about Eric was his size and feel for the game. Eric will be capable of playing multiple positions on offense and we feel he has a chance to be an elite defender. He comes from a basketball family and plays for one of the best programs in the state of Ohio." 

Sharron Young (Morgantown, W.Va.) a 6'0'' guard, finished his junior campaign averaging 21 points, 7.9 rebounds, 6.8 assists, and 4.7 steals. As a sophomore at Morgantown HS, Young was a first-team all-state selection with an average of 15 points. He also played a prominent role as a freshman on a team that finished state runner-up.

"Sharron is first and foremost a winner. We love that he will bring an elite level of toughness, defense, and play-making ability to our program. He comes from a high school that over the past couple of years has dominated the state of West Virginia with back-to-back state titles."
