John Groce Steps Down as Head Men’s Basketball Coach at The University of Akron

AKRON, Ohio — March 30 — The University of Akron (UA) announced today that head men's basketball coach John Groce will be stepping down from his position, concluding a successful tenure leading the Zips basketball program.
Groce, who has served as head coach since 2017, guided the team to six Mid-American Conference championships and four NCAA postseason appearances, helping elevate the program's competitiveness and national profile. Under his leadership, the Zips became known for their disciplined play, strong defensive identity and consistent success within the conference.
"On behalf of The University of Akron, I want to thank coach Groce for his leadership, dedication and the positive impact he has had on our student-athletes and basketball program," said athletic director Dr. Andrew T. Goodrich. "He has represented the university with integrity and passion. We are grateful for all he has accomplished during his time here."
The university will begin a national search for the next head coach immediately. During the transition period, the UA assistant coaches will continue to support the program.
