Shokalook Named BIG EAST Player of the Week to Lead Trio of Zips Earning League Honors

NEW YORK - University of Akron men's soccer junior Jason Shokalook (Erie, Pa.) was honored by the BIG EAST Conference as its Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday, Oct. 9.

Additionally, redshirt sophomore GK Mitch Budler (Lincoln, Neb.) and junior Malik Henry (Hamilton, Ontario) were selected to the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Honor Roll.

Shokalook continued his dominating run of play last week registering four goals in victories over Northern Kentucky and DePaul to extend the Zips' winning streak to three. He finished the week recording a team-high 18 shots, including nine on goal and tallied two goals against both squads and has now posted a brace in three consecutive matches.

After battling Northern Kentucky through a scoreless opening half, Shokalook found the back of the net with what proved to be the game-winning tally on a header inside the box in the 55th minute. He added another header goal in the 63rd minute and finished the evening with a season- and career-high totals in shots (9) and shots on goal (7).

Shokalook again led the Zips against DePaul, as Akron scored three goals in the second half to earn a 3-0 victory. He found the back of the net in the 73rd and 81st minutes, respectively, for his team-leading ninth and 10th goals of the year en route to finishing the afternoon with a game-high nine shots.

On the season, Shokalook owns team-high marks in goals (10), assists (4), points (24), shots (52), shots on goal (27) and game-winners (2).

Henry led a dominating defensive effort for the Zips that resulted in a pair of shutouts against Northern Kentucky and DePaul. Akron held its opponents to six total shots, with four coming on net. Henry helped Akron hold Northern Kentucky to two total shots on the evening, while he netting a pair of assists on the week.

Budler turned in another solid week registering a pair of clean sheets in 2-0 and 3-0 victories over Northern Kentucky and DePaul. With both contests scoreless entering the second half, Budler proved to be a stalwart for the Zips making four saves against six total shots. Both of his saves against the Norse kept the contest scoreless, while his first save of the afternoon versus the Blue Demons did the same.
The fourth-rated Zips return to action on Tuesday (Oct. 10) with a 7 p.m. showdown at Cleveland State.
