Zips win in 5 sets over Central Michigan

AKRON, OH --The Akron volleyball team knocked off the Central Michigan Chippewas in five sets (23-25, 25-14, 15-25, 25-13, 15-10) Friday at home at James A Rhodes Arena.
The win moved the Zips' record to 10-7 overall and 5-1 in MAC action. The Chippewas fall to 8-11 on the season and 2-5 in conference play.
The Zips were led by a double-double from Faith Johnson, who registered 17 kills and 12 digs on the day. Genevieve Hara also added 12 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Vanessa Del Real chipped in with 19 digs to go with six blocks from Ellen Kinnaird.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Zips dropped a back-and-forth first set, losing 25-23 in a game that featured three lead changes and was tied eight times. Neither team led by more than four points in the match.
SET 2 | Akron responded to pick up a 25-14 victory in set two, evening the match at one set apiece. The Zips scored first and never trailed in the set to earn the victory. Akron opened its biggest lead of the stanza, 11 points, to finish off the set. The Zips hit .393 over the course of the set.
SET 3 | Central Michigan responded to win set number three, putting Akron in a two sets to one hole. The Zips fell behind on the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before falling in the set 25-15.
SET 4 | Akron then responded to win set four 25-13 to force a fifth set. The Zips led from the opening point in the set to earn the victory. Akron finished up the stanza on a strong note, claiming its biggest lead, 12 points, to close out the set. Akron also supplemented their offense with four aces in the set.
SET 5 | Down two sets to one, Akron fought back to win sets four and five, culminating in a 15-10 fifth-set victory, to take the match 3-2. The Zips took the lead for good at 6-5 in a set that had just one lead change before the Zips took over the lead and won their fourth straight match.

Akron travels to Ball State next week for a pair of matches on Thursday and Friday. Both matches are set to start at 6 p.m. in Muncie, Indiana.
