Zips Drop Competitive Match to Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, MI --The Akron volleyball team fell Saturday in a competitive match as the Western Michigan Broncos posted a 3-1 (16-25, 25-22, 24-26, 26-28) at the Read Fieldhouse/University Arena.
The loss dropped Akron's record to 11-13 overall and 6-7 in MAC play. Western Michigan improves to 23-2 overall and a perfect 13-0 in conference.Â
The Zips were led by a double-double from Faith Johnson, who registered 21 kills and 13 digs on the day. Karleighana Jones also added 13 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Lauren Baker chipped in with 17 digs to go with six blocks from Ellen Kinnaird.

» Akron had four players in double figures in digs.
» Eliska Vytiskova had a team-high two aces and a team-high 49 assists in the loss.
» Faith Johnson registered a double-double with a match-high 21 kills and 13 digs
» Akron got a team-high 17 digs from Lauren Baker.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Zips lost set one 25-16 in spite of a solid showing on the attacking side. Akron registered a .344 attack percentage with 13 kills in the set loss.
SET 2 | Akron evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-22 victory in the second set. The Zips took the set with the help of a solid performance on the attacking side. Akron put together a .323 attack percentage with 13 kills in the set win. The Zips opened up a 17-12 lead in the stanza and coasted to victory from there. The Akron offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza. Akron's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking six Western Michigan attacks in the stanza. It was only the thirteenth time that the Broncos have lost a set this season.
SET 3 | Western Michigan grabbed a 2-1 match lead after taking down the Zips in set three. The Zips dropped the first point and never took the lead before losing the set in extra points, 26-24.
SET 4 | Akron then fell in the fourth set 28-26 to finish off the match. The Zips dropped the set in spite of a solid showing on the attacking end. Akron put together a .313 attack percentage with 19 kills in the set loss.
Up Next
The Zips will return home for their final home weekend series on November 3 and 4 against the Bowling Green Falcons. On Saturday, Akron will celebrate Senior Day.
