Volleyball Looks to Get Back in Win Column as They Host Toledo This Weekend

AKRON, Ohio – This Friday and Saturday the University of Akron volleyball team will host the Rockets of the University of Toledo. Akron is coming off three losses on the road, but they are currently carrying a four-game win streak at home – a streak that they look to continue this weekend. On October 20, the Zips will have their Pink Match to support Breast Cancer Awareness, while Saturday's match will be Youth Day.

The Zips (10-10, 5-4 MAC) will host Toledo (8-12, 6-3 MAC) for two matches before Akron hits the road again next weekend. Friday's match will begin at 6 p.m. at James A. Rhodes Arena. Then Saturday's match has first serve at 4 p.m.

ABOUT THE ZIPS
The Zips struggled on the road in Muncie, Indiana and Buffalo, New York falling twice to Ball State (0-3 and 1-3) and to Buffalo (0-3). In the first game against Ball State last week, Faith Johnson registered her 11th double-double of the season with her 10 kills and 10 digs. Vanessa Del Real had 3 aces against Ball State in the second game to help bring her season total to 38 service aces. She is second on the team to Eliska Vytiskova who has brought her total to 40 service aces on the season. As a team, Akron is ranked 8th in the country for aces per set as a team. Vytiskova also registered her eighth double-double last week as she registered 15 digs and 34 assists in the match. Within the MAC, the Zips remain in second place in the East Division coming into this weekend.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
Toledo split against Buffalo last Friday and Saturday with both matches going to five sets. Then lost to Ball State on Tuesday evening 0-3. However, all 13 sets that the Rockets played in the last week have been competitive sets. Against the Cardinals, senior Taylor Alt tied for the team lead with 11 kills and is eight away from passing L.G. Bass (1,546 kills, 1984-87) for most career kills in school history with her current total of 1,539. Fifth-year senior Ryann Jaqua led all players with 21 digs, and freshman Macy Hatkevich added 35 assists. Senior Abby Erickson led Toledo with three blocks and has now tallied at least three blocks in six of her last seven matches.

Next weekend the Zips hit the road for a match against Northern Illinois on Friday October 27 at 6 p.m. before they head to face Western Michigan in Kalamazoo, Michigan on Saturday October 28 at 3 p.m.
