Niagara Edges Akron in Non-Conference Showdown

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's soccer battled for a full 90 minutes, but a first-half goal proved too much for the Zips (1-1-2) to overcome as Niagara (3-3-0) posted a 2-0 non-conference victory on Thursday, Sept. 8, at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Akron matched the Purple Eagles with 12 shots apiece on the evening, with Niagara registering a 5-4 edge in shots on goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The two teams battled through a nearly scoreless first half before Niagara cracked the scoring column first with a goal from Annie Ibey at the 43:03 mark.
• The contest remained locked at a one-goal margin until Ibey garnered the brace with her second tally of the night in the 82nd minute (81:49).
• Akron was paced by two shots apiece from sophomores Caitlin Bruni (Canal Fulton, Ohio), Sarah Nguyen (Irwin, Pa.) and Katie Stafford (Gahanna, Ohio).
• Sophomore GK Maxima Carlitz (Stolberg, Germany) collected a pair of saves in net for the Zips.
