DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's soccer team battled a talented Dayton squad down to the wire before the Zips (1-2-2) suffered a 2-0 non-conference setback to the Flyers (6-1-1) on Sunday, Sept. 11.
"It was great to see our team come together and battle for and with each other this afternoon," Akron head coach Jen Simonetti said. "Dayton was a very strong opponent, but we were able to build and create our moments in the game and just need to keep building off that going into conference play."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Dayton scored what proved the be the game-winning tally in the 18th minute (17:11) on a goal from Audrey Steiert.
• Sophoore Calli Swisher (Alliance, Ohio) posted Akron's first shot on goal at the 66:14 mark, a strike that was saved by Madelyn Dewey.
• Freshman Kristina Syragakis (Quebec, Canada) added another strike on goal for the Zips in the 76th minute (75:53), but Dewey again pulled in the shot for the save.
• The Flyers capped the scoring in the affair at the 85:58 mark when Mairin Wessner found the back of the net to give Dayton a 2-0 lead.
• Akron was paced by two shots each from Syragakis and sophomore Ella Hadley (Concord, Ohio), while four other Zips recorded a shot apiece.
• Sophomore GK Penelope Cuirinier (Mionnay, France) collected nine saves in net for Akron.
