BOXSCORE (PDF)
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – In a non-conference showdown at No. 18 Penn State, the 14th-rated University of Akron men's soccer team came up short of securing a road victory against the defending Big Ten Conference champions as the Nittany Lions (4-2-2) bested the Zips (4-2-2) on Sunday, Sept. 25, 1-0.
Liam Butts scored what proved to be the game-winning tally for Penn State in the 44th minute (43:40) and the Nittany Lions withstood second-half challenges from Akron to earn the win.
"We are disappointed with today's result," Akron head coach Jared Embick commented. "I thought we started the game well, but we're not able to sustain it. A silly turnover led to a goal, and we just didn't play with the intensity, effort and focus required to win on the road. It was a setback after a positive performance at Pitt and we have to regroup quickly to be ready to play at home on Wednesday."
The Zips were led offensively by two shots apiece from sophomore Dyson Clapier (Layton, Utah) and junior Renato Kauzlaric (Zagreb, Croatia), while redshirt freshman GK Mitch Budler (Lincoln, Neb.) added a pair of saves in net for Akron.
