Akron Drops Season Opener to Eastern Illinois in Opening Day of Top Dawg Challenge

AKRON, Ohio- The Akron volleyball team (0-1) dropped its season opener to Eastern Illinois, 3-0 (20-25, 25-27, 18-25) on Friday in the opening day of the Top Dawg Challenge hosted by Butler.

Senior Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio) led the Zips' offense with 10 kills, while junior Faith Johnson (Naperville, Ill.) rounded out the offensive efforts with seven kills. Junior Anne Lesure (Carmel, Ind.) led the squad with 13 assists and one of the team's four aces.

Eastern Illinois' defense was a tough match for Akron as the Zips only posted a .082 hitting percentage. EIU was able to capitalize on 21 attacking errors by Akron while defending above the net blocking seven of their kill attempts.

Akron will close out the Top Dawg Challenge on Saturday, Aug. 27 as the Zips will face Oakland at 3 p.m. and tournament host Butler at 6 p.m. The match against Butler can be seen on ESPN+. Live stats are available at GoZips.com.
