Zips Celebrate Senior Day at Skeeles Field, Falls in Finale against Miami

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips celebrated Senior Day prior to Sunday's #MACtion series finale against Miami as the RedHawks posted a 20-3 win at Skeeles Field.

Prior to the game Akron recognized its graduating seniors for the Justin Barr (Pensacola, Fla.), Zac Granger (Elmira, N.Y.), Jackson Haas (Cincinnati, Ohio), Taed Heydinger (Bayfield, Colo.), Jackson Hickert (Ballwin, Mo.), Matthew Radtka (Uniontown, Ohio), Jerry Reinhart (Batavia, N.Y.), Bryant Shellenbarger (Mount Vernon, Ohio), Conor Steinbaugh (Georgetown, Ill.) and Tate Wargo (Benld, Ill.) prepared for their final game at Skeeles Field.

Barr led the Zips  with a 3-for-4 performance with a double and a RBI, while Shellenbarger collected one hit, and went 6-for-14 for the series to lead the squad with a .429 batting average.

The RedHawks opened the finale with a pair of solo homeruns to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Akron cut the lead in half as Wargo led-off the game with a base on balls and scored after Shellenbarger and Granger singled and doubled to right field, respectively. The Zips added runs in the fourth and the fifth innings, as Haas launched a two-out solo homerun to left field and freshman Cameron Benson (Farmington Hills, Mich.) tripled to right field. The Redhawks answered in the second and scored at least one run per inning through seven innings and exploded for 10 runs in the eighth.

The Akron Zips baseball program is scheduled to play the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Canal Park, home of the Akron RubberDucks, on Monday, May 16 at 6 p.m. Admission for the game is free.

Monday's game marks the return of the Zips baseball to Canal Park, where the team has played at least one game every season from the park's opening in 1997 until 2015. Akron is 24-33 all-time when playing at the home of the RubberDucks, the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians. This will be the fourth meeting all-time between the Zips and Yellow Jackets and first since a season opening series in 2013. Georgia Tech leads the all-time series with Akron 3-0.
