MUNCIE, Ind. – The Akron fell 8-3 to Ball State as senior Jerry Reinhart (Batavia, N.Y.) led the Zips' offense in the series opener at Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark on Friday.

Reinhart recorded two of the Zips' seven hits, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a homerun and a triple for two RBI and two runs scored. Akron plated the initial run of the game on Reinhart's solo shot to left field in the third inning. The Cardinals (18-12, 13-2 MAC) responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning and tacked on four runs in the fifth for a 5-1 advantage. Zips (10-22, 8-13 MAC) would cross the plate two more times in the top of the seventh. Akron relinquished three additional runs in the eighth as the Cardinals pushed the spread to five runs.

Graduate student Jackson Haas (Cincinnati, Ohio), freshman Michael Sprockett (West Chester, Ohio), senior Zac Granger (Elmira, N.Y.), senior Bryant Shellenbarger (Mount Vernon, Ohio) and graduate student Nick Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.) registered the other five hits for Akron, while Hass recorded an RBI and Granger scored.

Senior Taed Heydinger (Bayfield, Colo.) threw 4.2 innings, allowing five runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Sophomore Sammy Tortorella (Pittsburgh, Pa.) hurled 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits with two strikeouts.
