Zips Even Series Against WMU with 4-2 Win

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron evened the series 2-2 against Western Michigan as the Zips won the series finale 4-2 on Sunday at Skeeles Field. With the Win the Zips moved to eight Mid-American Conference wins, tying last year's mark midway through the MAC schedule.

The Akron (10-21, 8-12 MAC) offense was paced by seniors Bryant Shellenbarger (Mount Vernon, Ohio) and Justin Barr (Pensacola, Fla.). Shellenbarger scored the Zips first two runs and went 2-for-3 from the plate with a homerun, RBI and a walk, while Barr registered a 3-for-5 performance with a pair of RBI.

Western Michigan (8-19, 6-8 MAC) scored in the first inning on three consecutive base hits through the left side just after graduate student Nick Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.) threw out a WMU baserunner at home. The Broncos followed with an RBI base hit for a 1-0 advantage. The Zips tied the game in the second inning when Shellenbarger blasted a lead-off solo homerun to right field. Two innings later, Akron claimed a 2-1 advantage as Shellenbarger scored again, this time on a senior Tate Wargo (Benld, Ill.) triple to left center field. WMU tied the game in the fifth on a wild pitch. With game tied 2-2, Barr delivered a bases loaded single to right field for two RBI and a 4-2 Zips advantage.

Both starting pitchers threw to a 2-2 draw into the sixth inning as Akron graduate student Brady Biglin (Crestline, Ohio) allowed a pair of runs on four hits with six strikeouts and five walks. Freshman Joey Herrick (Rochester Hills, Mich.) earned the win for Akron, hurling 2.1 innings and allowing only one hit with two strikeouts and a walk. Junior Brett Dietrich (Goshen, Ohio) closed the door and earned the save with 1.2 innings pitched, allowing one hit with a pair of K's.

Akron will travel to Muncie, Ind. for the next four-game #MACtion series against Ball State on Friday through Sunday, April 15-17.
