Akron Set to Compete at GARC Rifle Championships

AKRON, Ohio - The 10th-ranked University of Akron rifle team will vie for a team championship this weekend as the Zips battle for the Great America Rifle Conference Championships hosted by Army this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25-26 in West Point, N.Y.

The smallbore rifle competition will take place on Friday, Feb. 25, starting at 8 a.m., before the championships conclude with the air rifle race on Saturday, Feb. 26, at the same time.

The championship field includes; No. 2 Kentucky, No. 5 Ole Miss, No. 6 West Virginia, No. 7 Navy, No. 10 Akron, No. 12 Army, No. 15 North Carolina State and No. 16 Memphis.

Rewarded for the Zips' success this season, senior Andre Gross (Webster, N.Y.) will culminate his senior campaign on the biggest stage as he garnered an at-large selection to compete in the air rifle and smallbore at the NCAA Rifle Championships, March 11-12, in Colorado Springs, Colo., when the tournament pairings were unveiled on Tuesday, Feb. 22.

Gross earned his third career NCAA Championship berth having qualified as an individual in the smallbore as a freshman during the 2018-19 campaign and as a member of the Zips' squad that punched its ticket to the championships as a team during the 2019-20 season.

Gross holds the distinction of becoming the first Akron Zip to qualify in both the air rifle and smallbore at the NCAA Championships in a single year and becomes the fifth Zip to qualify as an at-large individual selection. He joins sophomore Kayla Andreoli (Washington, Pa.) (2021), Matt Chezem (2015), Sarah Benjamin (2010) and Jenna Compton (2009).

Gross has registered a team-best combined 1171.13 average on the campaign in the air rifle and smallbore, while leading the squad with a 581.60 average in the smallbore and posting a 589.53 average in air rifle. Earlier this season, he established a program-record score of 597 in the air rifle in an Akron victory over Ohio State on Jan. 30.

Headlining Akron this season with combined averages of 1171.13, 1168.00, 1167.31, 1167.29 and 1165.64, respectively, is Gross, Andreoli, senior Wyatt Openshaw (Parkton, Md.), sophomore Gavin Perkowski (Bolivar, Ohio) and freshman Alexis Kirk (Clarence Center, N.Y.).

Owning the top-five averages of 581.60, 579.14, 577.87, 567.57 and 576.07, respectively, in the smallbore are Gross, Openshaw, Andreoli, Perkowski and sophomore Erin Schnupp (Gorham, Maine).

Perkowski, Kirk, Andreoli, Gross and senior Jeanne Haverhill (Coopersburg, Pa.) lead Akron in the air rifle averaging scores of 590.71, 590.47, 590.13, 589.53 and 588.64.
