Akron Posts Dominant Win on Senior Night

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips volleyball team dominated the final set at James A. Rhodes Arena for 2022, defeating Miami 25-10 en route to a 3-0 match win over the Miami RedHawks on Saturday night.

Prior to the match, Akron recognized Miami's seniors Jacquelyn Krumnauer  and Allyson Severance before honoring the Zips 2022 seniors Rachel Abramson (Waddell, Ariz.), Lauren Latka (Zionsville, Ind.) and Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio) in Senior Night ceremonies.

Junior Faith Johnson (Naperville, Ill.) registered a match-high 17 kills with a team-best .421 hitting percentage. Johnson recorded 21 points for the Zips by adding four service aces. Ochaya followed with 12 points on nine kills, two blocks and a pair of aces. The Zips finished the match with 13 service aces as Ellen Kinnaird (3), Baylee Vought (2) and Genevieve Hara (2) added to the team total. Vought also tallied four kills and tossed a team-high 30 assists. Defensively, Latka anchored the defense with 14 digs and Kinnaird paced the arial attack defense with four blocks.

The Zips won a tight first set 25-22 as the RedHawks attempted to steal the lead after trailing 24-20, but a Miami hitting error ended the set. Johnson floored five kills to lead the Zips. In the second set, Johnson pounded down nine kills as Akron won 25-23. The deciding set played out differently as the Zips issued six service aces with a balanced attack that totaled 11 kills.

The Zips are scheduled to be back in action for the final time of the 2022 campaign at Buffalo. On Wednesday, Nov. 16, the Zips will travel to Alumni Arena for a 6 p.m. season finale start time.
