Johnson Leads Akron as Zips Fall to RedHawks

AKRON, Ohio – In a closely fought battle, the Akron Zips volleyball team fell 3-0 as the Miami RedHawks snapped a 12-game losing streak at James A. Rhodes Arena on Friday.

The first set needed 30 points to decide the winner as Miami collected back-to-back points with the game knotted a 28 apiece. The RedHawks closed out the second set with a 25-20 ledger and won the final set of the evening 25-23.

Junior Faith Johnson led the Zips offense with 12 kills followed by senior Teagan Ochaya (9) and Sophomore Gia Padilla (7). Padilla led the squad with a .357 hitting percentage while Johnson followed with a .298 average. Freshman Baylee Vought tossed a career-best 30 assists.

Defensively, senior Lauren Latka paced the Zips' ground defense with 10 digs while Ochaya and Vought registered nine and seven, respectively. Sophomores Genevieve Hara denied a team-best three attacks as sophomore Karleighana Jones (2), sophomore Ellen Kinnaird (2) and Vought (2) collected two each.

Allyson Severance led Miami with 12 kills, earning a match-best 13.5 points.

Akron and Miami are scheduled to battle again at The JAR in Akron's final home match of the 2022 season and Senior Night. The Mid-American Conference match is slated to begin at 5 p.m.
