Bowling Green comes into play on Thursday, Oct. 6, at 2-4-3 on the campaign, including a 0-1-0 record in the Mid-American Conference, following a 1-0 setback at Georgetown on Saturday, Oct. 1.
Sophomore Alberto Anaya leads the Falcons in goals (3), assists (3), points (9), shots (25), shots on goal (11) and game-winners (2). Junior GK Brendan Graves has pulled in 21 saves en route to posting a 0.67 goals against average and a trio of shutouts.
As a team, the Falcons are ranked 15th in the NCAA in save percentage (.812), 17th in goals against average (.667) and 32nd in shots per game (14.89).
Individually, Graves is rated 20th in goals against average (.667), 44th in shutouts (3) and 50th in save percentage (.778), while Anaya is 25th in game-winning goals (2).
SERIES HISTORY
Akron and Bowling Green are meeting for 66th time in program history with the Zips owning a 50-10-5 series advantage, including a 21-4-4 mark on the road. A year ago, the Zips bested the Falcons, 5-1, on Oct. 22, 2021 at FirstEnergy Stadium.
IN OUR LAST MEETING (OCT. 22, 2021 - AKRON, OHIO)
Akron sophomore Jason Shokalook (Erie, Pa.) crafted his first career hat trick to spearhead the 24th-rated Zips to a dramatic 5-1 victory past No. 14 Bowling Green on Oct. 22, 2021 in Mid-American Conference action at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Despite being outshot on the evening, 19-14, the Zips and Falcons each registered five shots on goal, with four of Akron's strikes finding the back of the net.
Junior Will Jackson (Hudson, Ohio) gave the Zips a lead they didn't relinquish converting his second goal of the season at the 7:26 mark off an assist from sophomore Jonas Buechte (Rantigen, Germany).
Junior Ryan Kingsford (Herne Bay, England) extended Akron's advantage to 2-0 in the 14th minute (13:29) delivering a goal courtesy of an assist from Diogo Pacheco.
Shokalook scored the first of his three goals on the night off an assist from sophomore Malik Henry (Hamilton, Ontario) at the 41:27 mark to give the Zips a 3-0 lead at the intermission.
Henry and Kingsford combined to assist on Shokalook's tally in the 54th minute (53:22) before he capped the night finding the back of the net at the 79:38 mark courtesy of an assist from sophomore Wan Kuzri Wan Kamal (Carbondale, Ill.).
OWNING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER
The recent successes of the Akron men's soccer program over the past 16 seasons (2007-present) can be attributed to its play in the month of October. Since the start of the 2007 campaign, the Zips own a 80-16-11 (.799) ledger in the month, including a 45-7-5 (.833) mark in matches at FirstEnergy Stadium.
A LEGACY OF SUCCESS
Since 2007, the Akron men's soccer program has posted the highest winning percentage in the nation (.747), with an overall record of 229-65-38. The Zips are followed by Wake Forest, 219-68-38 (.732), Maryland, 218-68-46 (.726), North Carolina, 206-74-48 (.701) and Creighton, 203-82-34 (.690). Akron made 12 straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament (2007-18), earning a first-round bye in eight seasons. The Zips have advanced to the NCAA's Round of 16 in eight of their last 12 NCAA Tournament appearances. Since 1961, the Zips have advanced to the NCAA postseason 34 times, including 18 of the past 21 seasons.
CLAPIER EARNS NATIONAL ACCOLADES
Dyson Clapier was honored by the College Soccer News on its National Team of the Week it was announced on Oct. 3
Clapier posted team-high marks in goals (2), points (4), shots (8) and shots on goal (5) to lead Akron to wins over No. 24 Duquesne (1-0, Sept. 28) and Northern Illinois (4-1, Oct. 2). He netted the game-winning tally against Duquesne and scored the Zips' first tally versus Northern Illinois. On the season, Clapier leads the Zips in goals (5), points (12), shots (23), shots on goal (14) and game-winners (3).
