Akron Claims Rematch Over Kent State, Johnson Leads Zips

KENT, Ohio – The Akron Zips volleyball team defeated rival Kent State 3-0 by scores of 27-25, 26-24 and 25-23 to split the series and the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge points on Saturday.

Zips volleyball ids the first Akron program to record points for the all-sport challenge as the Flashes have a one-point advantage, 1.5-0.5.

Junior OH Faith Johnson led Akron, recording 14.5 points with a team-high 12 kills and and three block assists. Sophomore MB Ellen Kinnaird followed with 12.5 points, flooring a second-best nine kills to go along with three block assists. Sophomore MB Karleighana Jones added three block assists as the Zips registered six total blocks, while senior Teagan Ochaya and sophomore OH Matalasi Danielson supported the offense with seven and six kills, respectively.

Freshmen setters Avery Brown and Baylee Vought combined for 33 of 40 of the team's assists. Brown paced Akron with 18 assists, while Vought followed with 15 helpers.

Defensively, senior DS Lauren Latka posted 18 of Akron's 56 total digs followed by Vought (9 digs), Johnson (8 digs) and Ochaya (8 digs).

Mackenzie McGuire and Savannah Matthews led the Flashes' offense with 11 kills apiece in defeat.

The Zips are scheduled to be back in action at James A. Rhodes Arena, hosing the Ohio Bobcats on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21-22. Friday's match is slated for a 6 p.m. tipoff followed by Saturday's 4 p.m. start time. Fans can follow the action on ESPN+ or via live stats on GoZips.com.
