Akron Splits Series with Western Michigan

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips volleyball team dropped the second match of the series against Western Michigan 3-0 by scores of25-23, 25-15 and 25-13 on Saturday at James A. Rhodes Arena.

Senior Teagan Ochaya and junior Faith Johnson paced the Zips, scoring 13.5 points apiece. Ochaya collected 13 kills with a team-best .542 hitting percentage and added four digs and a block. Johnson also floored 13 kills and hit .286 with six digs and a block. Freshman Avery Brown tossed a team-high 20 assists and senior Lauren Latka collected a team-best 13 digs.

Akron (4-12, 1-4 MAC) started the game with three straight points, however a substitution error negated the points and Western Michigan (11-6, 3-2 MAC) awarded a point for the miscue. The Broncos floored the next point for a five-point swing before the Zips touched the scoreboard again. With the score tied 6-6, Akron used a 11-6 run for a 17-12 advantage. In return, the Broncos outscored Akron 11-5 to take a 23-22 advantage and closed out set with a two-point advantage, 25-23.

WMU claimed the second and third sets, 25-15 and 25-13, to split the season series. Abi Wilcoxson led WMU's offense with 12 kills and Keona Salesman followed with 10 kills. The Broncos registered nine team blocks as Kennedy Hogan and Wilcoxson led the way with five apiece.

Akron will be back in action on the road, traveling to Muncie, Ind. on Friday, Oct. 7 for a match against Ball State at Worthen Arena for a 6 p.m. start. On Saturday, Oct. 8, the Zips will play Toledo at Savage Arena with a 4 p.m. tip-off time.
