AKRON, Ohio -Â The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams travels to University Park, Pa., this Saturday, Jan. 29, as the Zips compete at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup hosted by Penn State.
The 35-event meet will commence with the women's long jump, pole vault and shot put beginning at 11 a.m., before the mixed 3,000 meters kicks off action on the track at 11:30 a.m.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2021 indoor season as the Zips were rated in the Event Squad rankings released on March 1, 2021 as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.

Akron ranked fifth nationally in the men's triple jump and among the top 20 in six different events.

The Zips also rated seventh in the men's long jump, ninth in the men's pole vault, 11th in the men's weight throw, 14th in the women's long jump and 19th in the women's 800 meters.

The Akron men and women ranked fifth and ninth, respectively, in the Great Lakes Regional polls.

ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2022 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron has a trio of student-athletes currently ranked in the top-25 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) during the 2022 indoor campaign, including, sophomore Zarik Brown (Dayton, Ohio), who is sixth in the nation in the men's 400 meters (46.72).
Also rated among the top-25 is redshirt sophomore Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio) (14th in the men's 400 meters – 47.10) and senior Hesham Eldesouky (Nasr City, Egypt) (22nd in the men's triple jump – 51-2.25 (15.60m).

CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips recorded a pair of top-five performances in program history in the squad's annual dual meet with rival Kent State.

Zarik Brown crossed the line in 46.72 to win the men's 400 meters in the second-fastest time in indoor program history, while junior Jacqueline Pokuaah (Akron, Ohio) garnered the third-best mark (41-4.25/12.60m) in the women's triple jump.

Earlier in the season, Charles Sanders posted the fifth-best time in indoor program history in the men's 400 meters crossing the line in 47.10 to win the event at the Akron Dual on Jan. 14.

Freshman Fegor Clifford (Delta State, Nigeria) registered the fifth-best mark in indoor program history, 40-3.50 (12.28m) to top the field in the women's triple jump at the Akron Quad on Jan. 14.

A WEEK AGO: The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams garnered a pair of dual-meet victories over rival Kent State on Friday, Jan. 21 at the Kent State Fieldhouse as the Zips posted 18 triumphs en route to registering 40 overall top-three performances.

Akron edged Kent State in the men's meet by a score of 78-66, while the Zips bettered the Golden Flashes in the women's competition, 76-74. The results will set the stage for when Kent State hosts the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, Feb. 25-26, when the two teams will vie for the league title in the men's and women's competitions as well as a pair of points in the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge.
