KENT, Ohio - The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams garnered a pair of dual-meet victories over rival Kent State on Friday, Jan. 21 at the Kent State Fieldhouse as the Zips posted 18 triumphs en route to registering 40 overall top-three performances.

Akron edged Kent State in the men's meet by a score of 78-66, while the Zips bettered the Golden Flashes in the women's competition, 76-74. The results will set the stage for when Kent State hosts the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, Feb. 25-26, when the two teams will vie for the league title in the men's and women's competitions as well as a pair of points in the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge.
"It is always a bg deal for us to do well against our rival school," Akron head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell commented. "Having the team come together against a good program like Kent State means a lot to us."

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Sophomore Zarik Brown (Dayton, Ohio) won the men's 400 meters in a career-best time of 46.72. His effort stands as the fifth-fastest time in the NCAA this season and represents the No. 2 mark in indoor program history.
• Redshirt sophomore Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio) was triple-winner for the Zips crossing the line first in the men's 60- and 200-meters in career-best times of 6.96 and 21.68, respectively, while running the lead-off leg on the winning 4x400 relay (3:16.17).
• Junior Amya Clarke (Christ Church, St. Kitts and Nevis) claimed a pair of victories in the women's 60- and 200-meters registering times of 7.64 and 24.88.
• Senior Hesham Eldesouky (Nasr City, Egypt) garnered a win in the men's long jump with a mark of 24-0.75 (7.33m) while simultaneously besting the field in the men's triple jump with a mark 51-2.25 (15.60m).
• Junior Jacqueline Pokuaah (Akron, Ohio) captured the women's triple jump with a career-best mark of 41-4.25 (12.60m). Her effort stands as the No. 20 performance in the NCAA this season and the third-best effort in indoor program history.
• Junior Nuh Andu (Doha, Qatar) won the men's high jump eclipsing 6-7.50 (2.02m).
• Freshman Fegor Clifford (Delta State, Nigeria) triumphed in the women's long jump with a career-best performance of 19-7.50 (5.98m).
• Sophomore Blake Lucius (Crestline, Ohio) recorded a career-best time of 4:15.16 to cross the line first in the men's mile.
• Junior Lizzy Gurko (Northfield, Ohio) captured the women's mile in a time of 5:13.38.
• Senior Jacob Ondash (Hiram, Ohio) triumphed in the men's 800 meters in a time of 1:54.43.
• Freshman Lane Graham (Killbuck, Ohio) won the men's shot put with a career-best mark of 53-3 (16.23m).
• Freshman Janay Bass (Akron, Ohio) finished first in the women's 400 meters in a career-best time of 56.82. She then ran the lead-off leg on the triumphant 4x400 relay squad of Bass, senior Varvara Lissichkina (Karaganda, Kazahkstan), junior Sara Foster (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and Clifford in 3:52.85.
• Lissichkina crossed the line first in the women's 800 meters in a time of 2:12.24.
• The men's 4x400 relay team of Sanders, freshmen Jimmy Harkelroad (Huron, Ohio) and Jack Weaver (Mt. Gilead, Ohio) and Brown capped the evening for Akron winning in 3:16.17.
