Akron Swimming and Diving Claims Runner-Up at Tim Welsh Classic Hosted by Notre Dame

South Bend, Ind. – The No. 25 ranked Akron swimming and diving program claimed runner-up honors at the Tim Welsh Classic Meet hosted by Notre Dame as Akron won six events and earned five silver medals en route to 993 points, defeating Ohio State (857.5 pts) and falling to the host (1,334.5 pts) at Rolfs Aquatic Center on Friday and Saturday.

Akron opened the event with a pair of runner-up finishes and a win in the 400-yard Medley Relay. The team of Madelyn Gatrall (54.04), Paula Garcia (1:00.73), Sarah Watson (52.34) and Sofia Henell (49.05) flew to a 3:36.16 time for the win. Watson added a silver medal performance in the 200-yard individual medley with a 2:00.74 time, while Paulina Nogaj (22.78), Watson (22.63), Rachel Schiffli (22.44) and Henell (22.19) touched second in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

In Friday's evening session, the Zips won 4-of-7 swimming events and Watson placed runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly (52.54). The 200-yard medley team of Gatrall (24.95), Andrea Fischer (27.70), Nogaj (23.26) and Henell (22.75) claimed top honors, stopping the timer at 1:37.66. The 800-yard freestyle relay team also posted a win as Watson (1:47.18), Weronika Gorecka (1:49.71), Nogaj (1:48.08) and Henell (1:50.22) cruised to a six-second victory with a 7:15.19 time. Nogaj and Gatrall added individual wins in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.19) and 100-yard backstroke (53.74), respectively.

On the final day of competition, Gorecka registered Akron's sixth win with a 1:56.16 time in the 200-yard backstroke. Fischer and Nogaj added runner-up performances in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:13.67) and 200-yard butterfly (1:57.95).

The Zips will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 28 at Toledo. The dual meet is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
