AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron women's soccer team continues its 2021 campaign this week with a pair of non-conference showdowns as the Zips host Cleveland State on Thursday, Sept. 9, before traveling to Youngstown State on Sunday, Sept. 12. Akron squares off against the Vikings at 7 p.m. on Thursday, while meeting Youngstown State at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

SCOUTING AKRON:
Akron returns eight starters in 2021, including four of its top-five goal scorers led by junior Sydney Worthy (Groveport, Ohio), who posted team-high marks in goals (3), points (8), shots (13) and game-winners (2). Tallying one goal each for the Zips was redshirt junior Aislinn Meaney (Ennis, Ireland), junior Carly Pcholinsky (South Park, Pa.) and freshman Annabel Thomas (Canonsburg, Pa.). Sophomore GK Vanessa Berlin (Gau-Oderheim, Germany) returns for Akron after starting six games this past spring and recording 35 saves.

Meaney paces the Zips this season in goals (1), points (2), shots (12) and shots on goal (4), while freshman goalkeeper Penelope Cuirinier (Mionnay, France) has recorded 26 saves on the campaign.

Akron is led by seventh-year head coach Noreen Herlihy, who maintains a 31-66-14 ledger at the helm of the Zips' program, and a 281-179-44 mark in 27 campaigns overall as a head coach.

Cleveland State enters plays this Thursday, Sept. 9, standing at 1-3-1on the campaign after tying 2-2 and falling 3-0, respectively, at Miami (OH) and Niagara on Thursday, Sept. 2 and Sunday, Sept. 5.

The Vikings are led by sophomore Kathryn Ramicone, who paces the squad in goals (1), points (2) and shots (5) and shots on goal (1). Freshman goalkeeper Kyla Valaitis has played in four games and recorded a team-high eight saves.

The Vikings are led by fifth-year head coach Dallas Boyer, who maintains a 33-31-5 ledger at the helm of the Cleveland State program.

Youngstown State enters play against the Zips on Sunday, Sept.12, sporting a 0-5-0 mark following a 2-1 loss at Duquesne on Sunday, Sept. 5., and a 2-1 setback against Marshall on Thursday, Sept. 2.

Directing the offensive exploits for the Penguins is junior Maddie Root, with goals (1), points (3), shots (4), shots on goal (1) and assists (1). Senior goalkeeper Zeeyana Jivraj has made five appearances and registered 32 saves.

The Penguins are led by fourth-year head coach Brian Shrum, who maintains a 6-38-6 ledger at the helm of the Youngstown State program.

SERIES HISTORY:
The Zips will square off against Cleveland State for the 10th time in program with Akron owning a 7-2-0 all-time series lead. The two teams last met during the 2017 campaign when the Vikings bested the Zips, 1-0, on Aug. 31, 2017.
Akron and Youngstown State will be meeting for the ninth time in program history with the Zips leading the series 7-0-1. Akron has won three straight contests against YSU. The Zips and Penguins last met on Sept. 6, 2019, with the Zips coming away with a 1-0 victory.

Cassidy Bell broke open the scoring contes in the seventh minute (7:54) for the Thundering Herd. Kat Gonzalez capitalized on a penalty kick at the 39:37 mark that extended Marshall's lead to 2-0.

Freshman Katie Stafford (Gahanna, Ohio) and Meaney directed the Zips' attack with a team-high two shots, including one on goal, while freshman Sarah Nguyen (Irwin, Pa.) added another strike for Akron. Gonzalez led Marshall with a game-high seven shots.
