The Mountaineers are led offensively by senior Yordan Popovic, who owns team-high marks in goals (3), points (6), shots (14) and shots on goal (8), while ranking second on the team in game-winners (1). Senior goalkeeper Steven Tekesky has recorded 15 saves en route to posting a 0.47 goals against average as part of five shutouts.

A golden goal in the 108th minute (107:44) from senior Hazem Sobhy (Cairo, Egypt) lifted the 21st-rated University of Akron men's soccer team to a dramatic 3-2 double-overtime victory past West Virginia on April 7, 2021 at FirstEnergy Stadium.

The game-winning tally for the Zips was set-up by a serve into the box from junior Sam Tojaga (Erie, Pa.) to Jason Shokalook, who got a head on the ball with the deflection falling to Sobhy, who struck a header into the corner of the box for his first goal at Akron.

The Zips also garnered goals in the match from junior Carlo Ritaccio (Westbury, N.Y.) at the 7:59 mark as well as Colin Biros in the 81st minute (80:46).

West Virginia posted a 14-9 edge in shot on the evening, with each side garnering five shots on goal apiece.

Freshman Dyson Clapier (Layton, Utah) directed the Zips' offensive efforts with a team-high three shots, while Shokalook added two shots of his own. Pau Jimenez Garcia led the Mountaineers with a game-high four shots.

In the previous 28 conference openers, Akron owns a 24-2-2 mark. A year ago, the Zips earned a 2-0 win over Bowling Green on March 7, 2021 at FirstEnergy Stadium.
SECOND-HALF GOAL LIFTS ZIPS TO A 1-0 WIN OVER YALE
A second-half goal from Dyson Clapier propelled the 10th-rated University of Akron men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Yale on Saturday, Sept. 25 at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Clapier scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 66th minute (65:55) when he drove nearly the length of the pitch before striking a ball past Bulldogs' goalkeeper Elian Haddock. Garnering an assist on the tally was sophomore Johnny Fitzgerald (Tallahassee, Fla.).

Clapier finished the evening with three shots, all on goal, while Jason Shokalook directed the Zips (5-2-1) to a 14-8 edge in shots, on the strength of a game-high four shots.

Akron made 12 straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament (2007-18), earning a first-round bye in eight seasons. The Zips have advanced to the NCAA's Round of 16 in eight of the last 13 years. The University of Akron was one of 95 schools nationwide to have its men's and women's soccer teams recognized by the United Soccer Coaches as 2020-21 Collegiate Team Academic Award winners.
