Zips Fall Short to Niagara

NIAGARA, N.Y.- The Akron women's soccer team (2-6-0) fell short on the road as Niagara capitalized on a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes and came away with a 2-1 victory on Thursday night at Niagara Field.
"This is a hard loss to swallow as we gave a great effort, especially in the second half," commented head coach Noreen Herlihy. "It's one game we will learn from and are confident that we will rebound from this one."

The Purple Eagles (6-1-0) outshot the Zips 23-8 on the game and 14-4 on shots on goal. Freshman Caitlin Bruni (Canal Fulton, Ohio), freshman Annabel Thomas (Cannonsburg, Pa.), and junior Sydney Worthy (Groveport, Ohio) led the Zips' attacks with two shots apiece.

The Zips got on the board first as sophomore Bailee Bowers (Dublin, Ohio) scored her first goal of the season at the 71:41 mark of the game on an assist from Sarah Nguyen (Irwin, Pa.).

Niagara evened the score nine minutes later on a goal from Djeynaba Thiam. The Purple Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the 87th minute when Mackenzie Mix found the back of the net to secure the victory.

Freshman goalkeeper Penelope Cuirinier (Mionnay, France) recorded a career-high 11 saves.

Akron will open conference play on the road as the Zips travel to rival Kent State on Thursday, Sept. 23 for a 7 p.m. game. A half-point in the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge will be on the line when Akron battles Kent State.
