Akron Earns 7-4 Win Over Northern Illinois in Series Finale

DeKalb, Ill. – The Akron Zips baseball team defeated Northern Illinois in the series final at Ralph McKinzie Field on Sunday.

With the win, Akron snapped a 25-game winless streak and earned their first Mid-American Conference victory in 22 games as senior pitcher Mark Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio) earned the win. Meyer faced 11 batters and allowed one hit in three innings of work.

Junior Jerry Reinhart (Batavia, N.Y.) led the Zips offense with a 3-for-5 performance with a double and an RBI as Akron distributed nine hits for seven runs with three doubles. Junior Dominick Trevino (Edmond, Okla.) followed with a pair of hits in three at-bats which included a double with two RBI and a run scored. Junior Cameron Tilly (Canberra, Australia) registered the third double for Akron and scored twice.

Akron started the scoring in the first inning as junior Zac Granger (Elmira, N.Y.) opened the game with a base on balls and scored when junior Justin Barr (Pensacola, Fla.) reached on an error and recorded the RBI. Northern Illinois tied the game in the bottom half of the first inning, but the Zips reclaimed the lead in the second inning and never relinquished the advantage. In the second inning, junior Bryant Shellenbarger (Mount Vernon, Ohio) walked and scored on a junior Tate Wargo (Benld, Ill.) groundout.

Akron increased the lead to a five-run advantage as the Zips crossed the plate twice in the fourth and sixth innings. In the fourth, Akron distributed three hits for two runs as senior Connor Regan (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) and Tilly scored. In the sixth, Barr scored after a double steal and a throwing error. Tilly followed with a run as Trevino doubled down the right field line. Trevino also scored in the top of the ninth inning on Reinhart's double after NIU narrowed Akron's lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the eighth.

The Zips took the 7-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth and the Huskies plated two runs, on one hit as junior pitcher Brady Mehl (Southlake, Texas) entered the game and recorded three consecutive outs while stranding one Huskie.

Up Next for the Zips is a trip to battle rival Kent State on Friday-Sunday, May 7-9 at Olga Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium.
