AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips baseball team distributed 16 hits and scored five runs, but could not overcome two big innings by the visiting Malone Pioneers on Wednesday afternoon at Skeeles Field.
Â
Junior Tate Wargo (Benld, Ill.) led the Zips with a 3-for-3 performance from the plate with three singles, a walk and a hit by pitch. He reached base five times and scored one run while driving one run across the plate.
Â
Senior Connor Regan (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) also recorded three hits in five attempts with two singles and a double with an RBI and a run scored. Junior Zac Granger (Elmira, N.Y.) followed with a 2-of-4 performance with a two doubles and an RBI, while junior Bradley Goulet (Cottage Grove, Minn.) and junior Jerry Reinhart (Batavia, N.Y.) each recorded doubles on a pair of 2-of-5 efforts. Junior Cameron Tilly (Canberra, Australia) was also 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Â
Malone started the scoring in the second inning, launching a pair of homeruns for a 3-0 advantage. The Pioneers increased the lead to 4-0 in the following inning, but Akron answered with a run in the bottom of the third inning.
Â
Reinhart opened the inning with a ground ruled double to right field, and after two groundouts, he landed at third base. With two outs, Wargo laid down a perfectly placed bunt for a base hit which plated Reinhart.
Â
The Malone countered with another big inning, crossing the plate four times on two hits and two errors. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Akron answered with three runs of five hits. Goulet and Regan started the rally with back-to-back doubles. Tilly and graduate Josh Nowak (Chicago, Ill.) followed with singles as Nowak recorded the RBI. Granger drove in the final run of the inning with a double down the left field line.
Â
The Pioneers added runs in the fifth sixth, and ninth innings, while Akron plated its final run in the bottom of the ninth with two outs as Nowak was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the final RBI of the game.
Â
