AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips baseball team could not overcome a late game surge by Ball State as the Cardinals completed a four-game sweep with a 13-2 win over the Zips on Sunday afternoon at Skeeles Field.
Akron started the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when junior Bradley Goulet (Cottage Grove, Minn.) reached base with a lead-off walk and stole second base before advancing to third on a wild pitch. With one out, junior Jerry Reinhart (Batavia, N.Y.) delivered a sacrifice flyout and collected an RBI in the process.
The Cardinals tied the game in the top of the fourth inning and established their first lead in the fifth by crossing the plate for 2-1 lead. During both innings, Ball State generated one run on one hit with no errors.
Reinhart accounted for the Zips second run and tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning as he sent a long flyball over the right field fence, collecting his second RBI of the game. The solo homerun marked the second homerun of the season for Reinhart and second of the series for the Zips – junior Justin Barr (Pensacola, Fla.) went deep in the series opener.
Ball State broke the stalemate in the top of the sixth inning and plated runs in the seventh and eighth innings, establishing a 13-2 advantage. In the sixth inning, the Cardinals pushed five runs across the plate as the first run was a result of three walks and a base hit, while the next four runs were generated by a grand slam to right field by Trenton Quartermaine. The Cardinals added two runs in the seventh and four in the eighth for the 13-2 advantage.
The Zips scattered two hits for the two runs as Reinhart and junior catcher Josh Beck (Ottawa Lake, Mich.) each recorded hits. Zips' starting pitcher freshman Sammy Tortorella (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was credited with the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in five innings of work.
Ball State starting pitcher Ty Johnson earned the win, throwing five innings and allowing two runs on two hits, while relief pitcher Tyler Schweitzer prevented the Zips from retaliating from the big fifth inning.
Akron will be back in action against Malone on Wednesday, April 14 at Skeeles Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. and fans can follow the action on Zips Digital Network live stream or via live stats on GoZips.com.
