AKRON, Ohio – For the second straight game, the Akron Zips had bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the last inning but couldn't push enough runs across the plate for the win as Bowling Green claimed the series with a 3-2 victory on Sunday at Skeeles Field.
Â
The Falcons scored one run in the second inning and two in the sixth which proved to be enough to earn their third win of the four-game series.
Â
Akron didn't score until the bottom of the ninth inning as junior Bryant Shellenbarger (Mount Vernon, Ohio) delivered a line drive to right field to open the inning. Leadoff hitter junior Roy Thurman (Indianapolis, Ind.) followed with an RBI double down the leftfield line. Junior Justin Barr (Pensacola, Fla.) reached first on a BGSU fielding error and senior Connor Regan (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) laid down a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt and was safe at first after a throwing error. With the bases loaded, the Falcons rolled a 6-4-3 double play and Thurman scored. Barr was left stranded at third.
Â
Shellenbarger went 2-for-3 on the day adding a single to centerfield, while Thurman also had two hits, adding a single through the middle of the field. Both Shellenbarger and Thurman scored. Junior Jerry Reinhart (Batavia, N.Y.) and graduate Josh Nowak (Chicago, Ill.) both singled.
Â
After playing the first 15 games at Skeeles Field, the Zips are scheduled to be on the road for the next five games, starting on Tuesday, March 30 at Dayton. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
