AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips baseball team pounded out 12 hits and scored four runs in a pair of innings en route to an 11-9 win over Shawnee State on Wednesday at Skeeles Field.
Â
With one swing of the bat, senior Connor Regan (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) cleared the bases and plated four runs with a grand slam to left field, following a four-run third inning to tie the game.
Â
The Zips scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning as Junior Justin Barr (Pensacola, Fla.) blasted a solo homerun over the left field wall. Shawnee State responded with five runs, scoring three runs in the second and two runs in the third inning for a 5-1 advantage.
Â
The Zips retaliated with eight runs over the next two innings, starting with a two-out rally in the third inning. With two outs, Barr reached base after being hit by a pitch and stole second. Junior Zac Granger (Elmira, N.Y.) put runners on the corners with a single, and Regan sent an RBI single into centerfield. Junior Cameron Tilly (Canberra, Australia) followed with an RBI single and a Shawnee State error allowed the other two runs to score.
Â
In the fourth inning, a pair of Bears miscues allowed juniors Bryant Shellenbarger (Mount Vernon, Ohio) and Austin Domer (Orrville, Ohio) to reach base while Barr loaded the bases on a sacrifice bunt as the Bears failed to cut-down the lead runner. With the bases loaded, Regan cleared the playing surface, giving Akron a 9-7 lead. Akron added runs in the fifth and eighth innings.
Â
The Zips scored one run on three hits in both innings as junior Bradley Goulet (Cottage Grove, Minn.), Shellenbarger and Domer delivered three consecutive singles to load the bases in the fifth. Barr's sacrifice fly out to right field plated the run, and in the eighth inning, freshman Kaito Hara (Houston, Texas) scored on a pair of wild pitches. Tilly, junior Kevin Koziol (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Goulet all singled.
Â
Â
Graduate Tyler Gault (Rittman, Ohio) earned the win, allowing four runs, two earned, on one hit in 13 batters faced. Freshman Yassir Kahook (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) closed the game for the save on a pair of fly-outs and a groundout.
Â
Regan, Tilly, Goulet and Shellenbarger all recorded two hits as Regan finished with five RBI, Barr and junior Jerry Reinhart (Batavia, N.Y.) each recorded two RBI, and Tilly had one.
