St. Bonaventure Outlasts Gritty Effort by Akron

OLEAN, N.Y. -Â The University of Akron women's lacrosse team found itself in a back-and-forth non-conference contest with St. Bonaventure (2-2) on Saturday, March 20, before the Bonnies escaped a strong second-half effort by the Zips (3-4) to earn a 13-12 triumph.

"In our fourth game with a one-goal difference this season, the girls were able to hold it together and show amazing grit and determination," Akron head coach Christy Mitchell commented. "Although we didn't clinch this one, the game is a reflection of our growth that will translate into more wins as we keep on developing."

Freshmen Noelle Boyd (Murrysville, Pa.), Madeline Shewbridge (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Anjali Silverheels (Hamburg, N.Y.) each registered a pair of goals to highlight Akron's offensive performances on the afternoon. Shewbridge and redshirt sophomore Kaylee Riggins (Zionsville, Ind.) also garnered an assist in the match.

Redshirt junior Anna Dennison (Fallston, Md.), freshman Jacqueline Glassey (Kilder, Ill.), redshirt freshmen Alexis Kiefer (West Chicago, Ill.), freshman Abby McMullen (Medina, Ohio) and redshirt freshman Abby Schaefer (Beaver Falls, Pa.) accounted for the balance of the Zips' goals in the tilt.

Redshirt freshmen GK's Abby Lerch (Coraopolis, Pa.) and Ashley Lapp (Missouri City, Texas) recorded two and six saves, respectively, for Akron, while their counterpart Ashley Herrick posted 10 stops for St. Bonaventure.

The Zips finished the contest registering a 28-25 edge in overall shots, while the Bonnies earned a 22-21 margin in shots on goal.

After falling behind 3-0 in the match, the Zips squared the score at three on the strength of first-half tallies from Dennison, Silverheels and Boyd at the 7:47, 8:32 and 10:13 marks, respectively.

St. Bonaventure regained the lead and held an 8-4 advantage before Boyd closed the half with a goal in the 28th minute (27:59).

Akron came out of the intermission and took a 9-8 lead with four unanswered tallies from Silverheels, Schaefer, McMullen and Riggins in the second (1:54), fifth (4:13 and 4:48) and sixth (5:23) minutes, respectively.

The Bonnies responded scoring four of the next five goals to assume a lead they didn't relinquish, despite goals from Kiefer, Shewbridge and Glassey at the 13:57, 15:35 and 29:42 marks, respectively.

Akron is slated to host Presbyterian in a 12 p.m. non-conference showdown at InfoCision Stadium on Tuesday, March 23.
