Kent, Ohio – The Akron women's volleyball team opened the match with a 25-19 first set win, but the Kent State Golden Flashes claimed the match 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 25-21, 25-27) at the M.A.C. Center on Friday night.

With the Win, Kent State evened the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Challenge standings at 2.0 pointe apiece.

Senior LS Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio), senior RS Shelby Fulmer (Perrysburg, Ohio) led Akron and junior RS Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio) all floored double-digit kills for Akron. Adleta posted a team-high 15 kills and added a team-best 21 digs, while Fulmer registered the team's best hitting percentage (.423) while landing 12 kills on 26 attempts with one error. Ochaya rounded out the double figure kills leaders with 10 and posted a second-best three blocks.

Junior MB Megan Kelly (Lakewood, Ill.) tendered five blocks to lead Akron's defensive efforts above the net and supported the offense with eight put-a-ways.

For a second straight match, senior S Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) and senior S Taylor Kuruzovich (Port Matilda, Pa.) garnered a combined 45 assists out of the Zips 52 on the evening. Also in consecutive matches, Weigand distributed a team-best 25 helpers and Kuruzovich added 20 assists and a team-high five service aces.

Senior DS Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) and Weigand paced Akron's ground defense with 14 and 11 digs, respectively.

Weigand opened the match and set the tone for the opening set with a service ace. The Zips established the early lead, but a Kent State managed to take control of the scoreboard at 9-8 and led by as many as three points, 15-12. Kelly floored Akron's next point, Kuruzovich delivered a service ace and junior MB Hannah Yaconis (Batavia, Ill.) and Ochaya denied a Golden Flashes attack attempt to knot the set at 15 all.

Akron tied the set again, 17-17, and proceeded to overtake the scoreboard, 19-18, and built a 22-19 lead. The Zips (2-6, 2-6 MAC) put the set away with three consecutive kills. First junior LS Jen Durra (Painesville, Ohio) from a Weigand assist. Weigand tossed the next pass to Fulmer for the point, and after a Kent State timeout, Fulmer connected with the floor again to end the set – Sharrits earned the assists on set point.

The Golden Flashes (6-0, 6-0 MAC) responded with three consecutive set wins to close out the match and remain undefeated on the season. Morgan Copley led Kent State in kills with 15, while Savannah Matthews and Lana Strejcek added 13 and 11, respectively.

The Zips continue conference play next weekend at home, battling Eastern Michigan on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 18-19 at James A. Rhodes Arena. Both matches are slated for 7 p.m. start times. Fans can follow the action by ESPN digital platforms (ESPN3 or ESPN+) or on GoZips.com via live stats.
