Akron Uses 10-0 Run to Defeat Jaguars, All Zips' Starters Scored Double Figures

Akron, Ohio – The Akron Zips used a 10-0 run to pull away from the visiting Southern Jaguars on Saturday night at James A. Rhodes Arena as all five starters scored in double figures en route to a 79-62 win.
Sophomore Greg Tribble (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the Zips' scoring efforts and sparked run on a dunk mid-way through the first half. Tribble finished with 19 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor and added an 11-of-13 performance from the free throw line. Sophomore Enrique Freeman (Cleveland, Ohio) followed with 15 points and recorded his fourth-straight double-double with a game-high 13 rebounds. The performance marks Freeman's seventh straight game with double digit boards and sixth double-double of the season. Rounding out the double-digit performers were junior Xavier Castaneda (Chicago, Ill.) with 13 points, junior Bryan Trimble, Jr. (Kansas City, Mo.) with 12 points and Sophomore Ali Ali (Kendallville, Ind.) with 11 points.
Akron scored the initial bucket of the game, but Southern grabbed a 4-2 lead at the 17:20 mark and held on for almost six minutes. During that stretch, Akron only hit 3-of-10 shots and trailed by as many as five points, 9-4, with 15-minutes showing on the clock.
With 11:30 left in the half, Ali found Tribble in the middle of the lane, who finished with a thunderous dunk that sparked the 10-0 run. The Zips outscored the Jaguars 20-7 to close out the half, taking a 31-21 advantage at the break. Zips completed the initial 20-minutes shooting 10-of-24 (.417) from the field with eight made free throws and three trifectas.
In the second half, the Zips pushed the advantage to double-digits and led by as many as 21 points before securing the 17-point win. Trimble shot a team-best 4-of-6 behind the 3-point arc and Ali dished out a team-high seven assists.
Tyrone Lyons led Southern with 13 points and Damien Sears added 10 points as Akron controlled the glass 39-33.
Akron is scheduled to host Florida A&M on Sunday, Dec. 12 at James A. Rhodes Arena.
