Zips Host Northern Illinois for Senior Weekend

AKRON, Ohio- The Akron volleyball team (10-15, 4-9 MAC) will host Northern Illinois (11-12, 5-8 MAC) for a series this weekend. The Zips open the series on Friday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m., followed by closing out the series on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 5 p.m. at the James A. Rhodes Arena. Prior to the match on Friday and Saturday, Akron will honor its seniors.

Prior to Friday's match seniors Alexis Adleta, Emily Weigand, and Taylor Sharrits will be honored, while seniors Megan Kelly, Jen Durra, and Hannah Yaconis will be honored prior to Saturday's match.

 ABOUT THE ZIPS
The Akron Zips volleyball team, under the direction of sixth-year head coach Tom Hanna, stand 10-15 overall and 4-9 in conference play after splitting its series with Ohio last weekend 2-3 and 3-0.

Offensively, the Zips are led by a pair of heavy hitters in seniors Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio) and Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) with 261 kills (2.90 per set) and 259 kills (2.91 per set), respectively. Senior Megan Kelly (Lakewood, Ill.) and sophomore Faith Johnson (Naperville, Ill.) follow with 175 and 156 total kills. Setter Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) leads the team with 889 assists (9.16 per set). Weigand leads the squad with a team-best 28 service aces.

Defensively, the Zips have a duo of players with over 100 digs in senior Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) with 401 digs, and Weigand with 236. Above the net, freshman Karleighana Jones (White Plains, N.Y.) has a team-high 75 blocks.

The Huskies, under 20th-year head coach Ray Gooden currently sit at 11-12 overall and 5-8 in conference play after falling to Ohio, 3-0.

Offensively, the Huskies are led by Katie Jablonksi with 267 kills, followed by 216 from Charli Atiemo.

Defensively, the Huskies are Francesca Bertucci leads the squad with 379 digs, while Jablonski has 243 digs. Above the net, NIU is led by Atiemo with 55 blocks, followed by Jasmine Kemp with 52.

SERIES VS. NIU
NIU leads the all-time series over Akron, 27-10. Last season, the Zips split with the Huskies 1-1 with a 3-0 loss, followed by a 3-0 win.

Akron will hit the road for a series with Western Michigan on Nov. 12-13. The Zips will square off with the Broncos on Friday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m., and close out the series on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 3 p.m.
