Western Michigan Rallies to Earn Victory Over Akron

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The University of Akron volleyball team battled throughout its Mid-American Conference showdown with Western Michigan on Saturday, Nov. 13, before the Broncos rallied to secure a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 26-24) triumph over the Zips.

Senior Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) registered a 13-kill and 12-dig effort for the Zips, while sophomore Faith Johnson (Naperville, Ill.) turned in a 13-kill and 11-dig performance. Senior Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) distributed a team-high 33 assists, while senior Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) posted a match-high 16 digs.

The opening set featured nine ties and five lead changes before a late rally by the Broncos secured a 25-20 decision in the opening frame. Adleta led the Zips with six kills in the first set.

Akron jumped out to the lead in the second set before Western Michigan overcame a five-point deficit to secure an identical 25-20 triumph. Adleta again paced the Zips with six kills in the set, while Weigand recorded 12 assists.

The deciding set was highlighted by 13 ties and eight lead changes with neither side leading by more than two points. The Zips used a 5-0 run sparked by a pair of kills from senior Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio) to build a 19-14 lead, and were within one point of claiming the set, before the Broncos collected back-to-back kills to secure the victory.
