Zips Visit Western Michigan for Final Road Match of the Season

AKRON, Ohio- The Akron Volleyball team will travel to Western Michigan this weekend for the final road series of the season. The Zips open the series on Friday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m., before closing out the series on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 3 p.m at University Arena.

ABOUT THE ZIPS
The Akron Zips volleyball team, under the direction of sixth-year head coach Tom Hanna, stand 10-17 overall and 4-11 in conference play after dropping a series to Northern Illinois last weekend with scores of 3-1 and 3-0.

Offensively, the Zips are led by a pair of heavy hitters in seniors Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio) and Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) with 269 kills (2.80 per set) and 2586kills (2.98 per set), respectively. Senior Megan Kelly (Lakewood, Ill.) and sophomore Faith Johnson (Naperville, Ill.) follow with 190 and 163 total kills. Setter Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) leads the team with 952 assists (9.15 per set). Weigand leads the squad with a team-best 30 service aces.

Defensively, the Zips have a duo of players with over 200 digs in senior Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) with 440 digs, and Weigand with 254. Above the net, freshman Karleighana Jones (White Plains, N.Y.) has a team-high 79 blocks.

SCOUTING WESTERN MICHIGAN
The Broncos, under 17th-year head coach Colleen Munson currently sit at 16-10 overall and 9-6 in conference play after splitting a series with Buffalo with scores of 2-3 and 3-1.

Offensively, the Broncos are led by a pair of hitters in Maggie King and Madison Merz who have 360 and 217 kills, respectively. Meredith Phillips follows with 188 kills.

Defensively, Mairead Boyle leads the squad with 382 digs, while Maddie Arundel has 298 digs. Above the net, WMU is led by Merzwith 43 blocks, followed by Phillips with 25.

Western Michigan leads the all-time series over Akron, 27-12. Last season, the Zips dropped two matches at home to the Broncos in 1-3 and 0-3 decisions.
