Freeman Leads Zips in Charity Exhibition

Morgantown, W.Va. – The Akron Zips started the 2021-22 season with a charity exhibition game against Big 12 West Virginia on Friday evening as the Mountaineers posted a 74-59 decision at WVU Coliseum. Proceeds benefited the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Research Endowment Fund.

Sophomore Enrique Freeman (Cleveland, Ohio) posted a double-double, collecting 11 points and 11 rebounds. Freeman shot 5-of-9 from the floor, including a corner 3-point field goal in the second half. The 2021 All-MAC defensive team member pulled down 11 rebounds with eight coming on the defensive end of the floor.

Graduate transfer K.J. Walton (Indianapolis, Ind) finished with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor and 3-of-6 from the free throw line, while sophomore Mikal Dawson (Huntington, W.Va.) and junior Bryan Trimble, Jr. (Kansas City, Mo.) chipped in eight points each.

The Mountaineers opened the game on a 12-4 run and led by 15 points at the break. In the second half, WVU led by as many as 32 points, but Akron continued to play aggressive as both teams posted 35-point totals in the final frame. The Zips held the advantage on the glass in both halves, finishing with 36-32 advantage.

Taz Sherman led WVU with 29 points and Sean McNeil added 10 points to round out the Mountaineers double-digit scorers.

Akron is scheduled to open its 2021-22 season on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. on ESPN2 against Ohio State at Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
