AKRON, Ohio- After dropping the second and third sets of Saturday's match against Kent State, the Akron volleyball team (9-12, 3-6 MAC) was able to force a decisive fifth game, but ultimately it was the Flashes who prevailed. Kent State claimed one point in the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge.

Freshman Karleighana Jones (White Plains, N.Y.) led the Zips' offense with a career-high 15 kills. Senior Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio) registered 14 kills, while sophomore Faith Johnson (Naperville, Ill.) and senior Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) had 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Senior Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) led Akron with 57 assists.

On defense the Zips collected 18 total blocks with Jones leading the way with five. Senior Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) led with a match-high 29 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The opening saw 19 tied scores and eight lead changes. Adleta and Ochaya led the Zips with five kills each. With the scored tied 28-28, back-to-back errors on Kent State sealed the No. 1 set for the Zips, 30-28. The Flashes committed 11 errors.
After being down 17-19, Akron tied the score to 21-all. Kent State capitalized on back-to-back kills and a service ace that secured the No. 2 set, 25-21.
Akron jumped out to an 11-9 lead before the Flashes used a 5-3 run that knotted the score at 14. Kent State took its first lead of the set (16-15 after back-to-back errors on the Zips, and would go on to secure the No. 3 set victory, 25-21. Six errors on the Zips proved to be costly in the third set.
After being down 9-1, Akron's offense ignited and took an 18-14 lead. The Flashes threatened with three straight points, but back-to-back kills from Adleta and senior Hannah Yaconis (Batavia, Ill.) put the Zips ahead, 21-18. Akron closed the fourth set on a 4-1 run to claim the 25-19 victory, forcing a fifth set. Akron out blocked the Flashes 8-0.
The final set consisted of four tied scores and two lead changes. After being tied 4-4, Kent State used a 6-2 run that gave the Flashes a 10-6 lead. The Flashes used a 3-1 run that secured the fifth set and match victory.

Akron will hit the road for a series with Ohio on Oct. 22-23. Firday, Oct. 22, the Zips will take on the Bobcats at 7 p.m., before closing out the series on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 6 p.m.
