Akron Relay Teams Break Pool Records on First Day of MAC Championships

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The No. 25-ranked University of Akron women's swimming and diving team broke back-to-back pool records in the 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay to kick off the 2020 MAC Championships, Wednesday evening.

The Zips swept the events contested on day one of the championships to take the lead with 80 points. Buffalo is currently second with 68 points, while Toledo, Eastern Michigan and Miami round out the top five, respectively.Â

In the 200 medley relay, Akron's team of Lauren Cooper (Dublin, Ohio), Andrea Fischer (Oak Grove, Minn.), Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba), and Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio) set a new pool record, turning in a time of 1:37.91. Last season, the Zips set a MAC record finishing less than two seconds quicker than this year, with a time of 1:36.28.

The Zips' squad Sofia Hennell (Linkoping, Sweden), Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland), Watson, and Jackie Pash (Carmel, Ind.) also broke the pool record in the 800 freestyle relay, finishing with a time of 7:11.13. Akron also broke the MAC record in this race last season.Â

Action at the 2020 MAC Championships continues on Thursday, Feb. 27, with prelims beginning at 10:30 a.m. and finals slated to start at 6:30 p.m.
