Akron Swimming and Diving Extends Lead on Day Two of 2020 MAC Championships

AKRON, Ohio – The No. 25-ranked University of Akron women's swimming and diving team extended its lead on day two of the 2020 Mid-American Conference Championships on Thursday evening in Buffalo, N.Y.

Akron increased its lead with a two-day total of 295 points. Buffalo sits in second with 251.5, while Eastern Michigan is in third with 178.

Senior Mackenzie Vargas (Roseville, Calif) kicked off the evening with a fifth-place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:52.03. Teammate and fellow senior Jessica Bonezzi (Wooster, Ohio) finished a tenth of a second behind Vargas to take sixth.Â

Sophomore Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) followed that up with a strong performance in the 200 IM, touching the wall at 1:57.65.Â

Senior Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio) took the bronze in the 50 free with a time of 22.68.

In the first diving event of the championships, the 1-meter dive, sophomore Kamryn Goodrick (Chesterland, Ohio) was the highest-placing Zip, taking seventh with a score of 262.32. Not far behind was freshman Paige Kalik (Irwin, Penn.), who finished ninth in the B-category dives with a score of 262.53.

In the final event of the evening, the 200 freestyle relay, the Zips brought home the gold thanks to the quartet of Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland), Waggoner, Watson and Sofia Henell (Linkoping, Sweden), who turned in a time of 1:29.39.

Day 3 of the 2020 swimming and diving MAC Championships continues tomorrow with prelims beginning at 10:30 a.m., and finals beginning at 6:30 p.m.
