Akron Swimming and Diving Extends Lead on Day Three of 2020 MAC Championships

AKRON, Ohio – The No. 25-ranked University of Akron women's swimming and diving team placed first in three of the six events held on day three of the 2020 MAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships Friday evening.Â
Â
The Zips increased their lead to 524 points, while Buffalo sits in second with 450 points. Eastern Michigan is in third with 312 points, while Miami follows closely behind in fourth place with 285 points.

Junior Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland) continued to dominate in the 100 fly, as she has all season, earning a first-place finish with a time of 52.42. Sophomore Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) finished half-a-second behind her, taking second with a time of 52.93.

Senior Jessica Bonezzi (Wooster, Ohio) followed up the victory with a third-place finish in the 400 IM, touching the wall at 4:16.83.Â

In the 200 free, freshman Victoria Kaufman (Westminster, Md.) was the highest-placing Zip, taking seventh and earning 12 points with a time of 1:50.39.

The Zips found themselves back on top in the 100 breaststroke, as junior Paula Garcia (Madrid, Spain) earned the gold with an impressive time of 1:00.32. Sophomore Andrea Fischer (Oak Grove, Minn.) also placed, taking third with a time of 1:01.37.

Taking fourth in the 100 backstroke was freshman Weronika Gorecka (Wroclaw, Poland) who finished with a time of 54.23.

In the final event of the evening, the 400 medley relay, the Zips were able to end on a high note, as the quartet of Gorecka, Garcia, Nogaj and senior Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio) finished on top with a time of 3:35.13.Â

Akron looks to clinch its seventh consecutive MAC Championship title on Saturday, February 29. Prelims begin at 10:30 a.m. and finals are slated to start at 6:30 p.m.Â
