Akron Rifle Tops Ohio State in NCAA Qualifier Match

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 5-ranked University of Akron rifle team defeated Ohio state, 4683 – 4651, in the NCAA qualifier match at Hugh W. Wiley Range in Columbus, Ohio.

Each team's score from the qualifier match is added to their top three scores of the season. The top eight programs receive an invitation to the NCAA Championships.
The Zips will find out their fate via the NCAA NC Rifle Selection Show, which is set to air on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 3 p.m., on NCAA.com.

The Zips put on a strong performance against the Buckeyes, finishing with 8 of the top shooters. Leading the way was senior Kera Kaufman (Delmont, S.D.) who shot an 1171 (581 SB, 590 AR). Not far behind were sophomores Jeanne Haverhill (Coopersburg, Pa.) and Patrick Schnupp (Gorham, Maine) as well as junior Wyatt Openshaw (Parkton, Md.) who each tied for second with an 1169.

As the Zips await the results, they will also be preparing to compete in the Great America Rifle Championships. Smallbore competition will take place on Friday, Feb. 28, and will then conclude with air rifle on Saturday, Feb. 29. Both times are TBA.
