MALIBU, Calif. — In its final game at Pepperdine, the University of Akron baseball team dropped a 7-1 decision to the undefeated Waves (7-0 overall) on Sunday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Â
Akron jumped on the scoreboard immediately. With two outs in the top of the first, junior CF Brenton Phillips (Albany, Ga.) doubled to left field. Junior DH Cameron Tilly (Canberra, Australia) then singled to left center, scoring Philips.
Â
After three quick outs in the bottom of the first, UA held the advantage, 1-0, marking the Zips' first lead of the season.
Â
The Waves tied the game in the bottom of the second. Senior 1B Justin Lutes reached on an error and advanced to second. He went to third on a balk and scored following a single from junior LF Mike Malinchak.
Â
In the bottom of the third, Pepperdine scored two runs to take a 3-1 lead. Senior 3B Aharon Modlin singled to left, scoring freshman 2B Ryan Johnson, who reached on a walk. Junior RF Reese Alexiades smacked a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring sophomore SS Wyatt Young, who singled.
Â
Pepperdine added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings as well as two runs in the eight to seal the win.
Â
The Zips (0-5 overall) had five hits on the day compared to Pepperdine's 12. UA also had two fielding errors, while the Waves had none.
Â
In his first start on the mound, freshman LHP Jacob Clark (Muncie, Ind.) took the loss for Akron (0-2 overall). He pitched 3.2 innings, fanning one and walking two.
Â
For Pepperdine, sophomore RHP Trevor Kniskern (1-0) threw 6.0 innings. He stuck out nine and walked none.
Â
"Although we fell short in all three games versus Pepperdine, it was a great experience for the players," said first-year head coach Chris Sabo. "Being in Malibu with the beautiful weather was great. We will gather ourselves and get ready for next week at Lamar."
Akron continues road play next weekend, traveling to Texas to face Lamar for a three-game series on Feb. 28-March 1.
