Akron Set to Battle Rival Kent State in Annual Indoor Dual Meet

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams continue their 2020 indoor campaign this weekend as the Zips travel to face rival Kent State in a dual meet on Friday, Jan. 24.
UP NEXT: The 28-event meet with the Golden Flashes will commence with the men's long jump and triple jump beginning at 5 p.m., before the women's mile kicks off action on the track at 6:30 p.m.
The event will be scored as a dual meet with 5-3-2-1 points being awarded for individual events with two scores per team, while relays will be scored with the winner being awarded five points and the runner-up three points.
On the men's side, the meet will feature the Zips, who were pegged to capture the 2020 Mid-American Conference Indoor Championship in the league's preseason coaches' poll, and the Golden Flashes, who were tabbed to place third.
In women's action, Akron and Kent State were picked first and fifth, respectively, in the preseason coaches' poll.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams garnered recognition for their efforts during the outdoor season as the Zips' women's squad ranked 48th in the final 2019 United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Division I Women's Outdoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
The Zips' men's and women's squads were the highest-rated teams in the MAC, while the men's and women's squads were ranked No. 19 and No. 23, respectively, in the final Collegiate Outdoor Dual Meet Rankings as compiled by Jesse Squire for Track and Field News.
The Akron men and women also ranked sixth and ninth, respectively, in the Great Lakes Regional polls.
ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2020 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron has three student-athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) during the indoor campaign, including senior Lucy Bryan (Bristol, England), who is third in the nation in the women's pole vault (14-6/4.42m).
Also rated among the top-25 is redshirt sophomore Noah Williams (Hilton, N.Y.) (fifth in men's 400 meters – 46.98) and redshirt freshman Demetrius Jackson (Beachwood, Ohio) (14th in the men's 200 meters – 21.25).
CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips garnered four overall top-five program marks in their dual meet against Central Michigan on Jan. 17.
Noah Williams posted the second-best effort in the 400 meters crossing the line in 46.98.
Demetrius Jackson turned in the No. 3 mark in the 200 meters (21.25) and No. 5 performance in the 60 meters (6.76).
Redshirt junior Marc Migliozzi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) clocked the fourth-fastest time in the mile crossing the line in 4:07.42.
A WEEK AGO: Demetrius Jackson won three events en route to posting a pair of top-five marks in indoor program history to headline the Zips' efforts in a pair of dual-meet victories past Central Michigan on Jan. 17, at the Stile Athletics Field House.
The Zips combined to win 20 events on the evening, while placing second in an additional 21 to best Central Michigan in the men's and women's competitions, respectively. Akron also garnered 59 career-best performances.
In the men's dual meet, Akron bettered the Chippewas, 100-46, while the Zips' women's squad edged Central Michigan, 84-64.
Jackson registered the third-fastest time in indoor program history in the men's 200 meters crossing the line first in 21.25, while posting the fifth-best performance in the 60 meters with a time of 6.76. Additionally, he ran the third leg on the victorious men's 4x400 relay squad of sophomore Amir Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio), Noah Williams, Jackson and freshman Zarik Brown (Dayton, Ohio) that crossed the line in 3:14.24.

Redshirt junior Dimitra Gnafaki (Chania, Greece) captured the women's 400 meters in a time of 58.17, while running the opening leg of the winning women's 4x400 relay team of Gnafaki, senior Iman Batiste (Dublin, Ohio), sophomore Sara Foster (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and senior Bailey Lack (Brunswick, Ohio), which crossed the line in 4:00.80.
Senior Haley Hess (Curtice, Ohio) finished first in the women's 3,000 meters in a career-best time of 9:55.73.
Senior Maike Anstett (Karlsruhe, Germany) claimed a triumph in a jump-off to earn the victory in the women's high jump with a mark of 5-3.25 (1.61m).
Sophomore Kassandra Roemer (Kaiserlautern, Germany) capped Akron's women's first-place efforts winning the women's long jump with a mark of 18-4.25 (5.59m).

A YEAR AGO: On a night where Jordan Latimer established a school-record mark of 26-0 (7.92m) to win the men's long jump, it was Matt Ludwig that stole the show for the Akron track and field team garnering a then world-leading and career-best mark of 19-1.50 (5.83m) to win the men's pole vault directing the Zips to a pair of dual-meet victories past Kent State in the annual Akron-Kent State dual on Jan. 25, 2019, at the Stile Athletics Field House.
The Zips combined to win 15 events on the evening, while placing second in an additional 16 to best their rival in the men's and women's competitions, respectively.
In the men's dual meet, Akron bettered Kent State, 78-72, while the Zips' women's squad edged the Golden Flashes, 79-72.
Latimer unleashed a career-best mark of 26-0 (7.92m) to set a school record in the men's long jump to better teammate Terrell McClain who posted a mark of 25-2.75 (7.69m) to place second.
A week after posting the No. 2 mark in the world in the men's pole vault, Ludwig elevated his game another level eclipsing 19-1.50 (5.83m) to win the event with the then No. 1 bar in the world in 2019. He attempted to establish a new collegiate record height of 19-5 (5.92m), but came up short in each of his three attempts to better a mark set by former Zip Shawn Barber in 2015. Ludwig's mark stands as the No. 3 all-time indoor collegiate jump.

AKRON DUO EARNS MAC ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS: Lucy Bryan and Noah Williams were recognized by the Mid-American Conference as its Women's Field and Men's Track Athletes of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
BRYAN NAMED AKRON SUMMA HEALTH STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: On the strength of turning in a season-best jump of 14-6 (4.42m) to claim the title in the women's pole vault at the Akron-Central Michigan Dual, Lucy Bryan was chosen as the Akron Summa Health Student-Athlete of the Week.
