YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio– Freshman Bailee Bowers' (Dublin, Ohio) first career goal and the first combined shutout of the season for goaltenders Libby Harper (Hatfield, England) and Vanessa Berlin (Gau-Oderheim, Germany) earned Akron a 1-0 victory over Youngstown State on Friday night at Farmer's National Bank Field.
As Akron improved to 2-3-0 overall on the campaign, the Zips also now own a 7-0-1 mark against the Penguins and have secured three straight victories.
"It was a great win as it's a tough place to play. We started off quite slow but settled into the game and had some really nice passages of play," said head coach Noreen Herlihy. "The team showed great character to keep battling especially down the stretch. That's what we need to see to get ready for the MAC. To score and get a clean sheet, that's a positive."
In the 36' of the contest, Bowers received a pass from sophomore midfielder Carly Pcholinsky (South Park, Ohio) down the left side of the box, Bowers dribbled, set, and fired a shot on goal past the Penguins keeper for the eventual game-winning tally.
The Zips keepers came up big in-between the pipes combining to record the first clean sheet of the season. Harper started the match and went on to make two saves while Berlin got the call in the second stanza and made one save.
On the night, the Akron offense posted 12 shots that included three Zips tallying a multi-shot performance. Pcholinsky and redshirt sophomore Aislinn Meaney (Ennis, Ireland) each recorded three shots in the contest and redshirt sophomore Charley Kale (Sylvania, Ohio) garnered a pair of shots. Four additional Akron players all registered one shot in the match.
Akron tallied a team-best seven shots in the first half of the match. Four of the Zips seven shots came on frame, including one from Pcholinsky, sophomore Kayleigh Penton (Vermilion, Ohio), Kale, and the game-winning goal by Bowers.
The Zips closed out the contest keeping the Penguins off the scoreboard in the final 45 minutes of play to earn the victory.
UA returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 8, when Akron plays host to Xavier at FirstEnergy Stadium at 1 p.m. Admission to all home Zips women's soccer home games are free to the public.
