ALBANY, N.Y.– Former WR A.J. Coney, Jr. (Oviedo, Fla.) and the Albany Empire captured the ArenaBowl XXXII championship on Sunday, defeating the Philadelphia Soul, 45-27, at the Times Union Center.
"It was a great feeling winning the Arena, Bowl, and becoming a world champion," Coney said. "I want to give a big thanks to the Empire, my coaches, and the Arena Football League for giving me the opportunity to further my career. It was a great rookie season. but it's only up from here."
Coney, who signed with the CFL'S Winnipeg Blue Bombers last year and played in two games, saw action in 12 games for the Empire this season. In the regular season, he had eight receptions for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Coney also had 19 kick returns for 340 yards (17.9 average).
At Akron, Coney was a team captain as a senior in 2017, helping the Zips to the 2017 MAC East championship and participating in the MAC Championship game and the Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl. Named the outstanding offensive performer following the 2017 season, Coney finished second in receiving with 43 receptions for 551 yards and three touchdowns. He averaged 12.8 yards per reception. In the win over Buffalo, Coney led the receivers with a career-high 91 yards on a career-high seven receptions. Named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, Coney also led the team's community service efforts.
Under first-year head coach Tom Arth, Akron returns 51 letterwinners. UA opens the 2019 season at Illinois on August 31 at Noon on the Big Ten Network. The home opener is slated for Sept. 7 against UAB at Noon on the CBS Sports Network.

Chima Athletics Ticket Office at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field (located at 375 E. Exchange Street, near Gate 1 at the southwest corner of the venue, at the corner of E. Exchange and S. Union streets) during business hours (Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.).
Group tickets start at $10 each (with a minimum of 15 people).
