AKRON, Ohio— University of Akron Director of Athletics Larry Williams announced today that head softball coach Julie Jones will not receive a contract extension, and the University will make a change at head coach for next season.
Â
"I would like to thank Julie Jones and her coaching staff for their dedication and passion over the last 13 seasons," Williams said. "Julie has imparted to the student-athletes in her program valuable lessons of integrity and work ethic that are the ideal of college athletics. Akron Athletics greatly appreciates all that Julie has done for the University, and we wish her the best moving forward."
Â
Williams said that the University will begin a national search for a new head softball coach.
Â
Named the sixth all-time head coach in July 2006, Jones just completed her 13th season at The University of Akron with a 289-373-7 (.437) overall record. During her tenure, Jones mentored 22 All-MAC honorees, five NCAA All-Mideast Region selections, 37 Academic All-MAC student-athletes, eight Academic All-District selections, two Academic All-Americans, the 2014 MAC Pitcher of the Year, the 2016 prestigious MAC Nan Harvey award winner, and the 2017 MAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year. The Zips recorded three winning seasons (2009, 2014, 2016) and reached the MAC tournament six times, advancing to the semifinal in 2009. The Zips finished the 2019 season at 13-31-2 (.304) overall and 3-18 (.143) in MAC play.
Â
"I will always be grateful to former UA athletic director Mack Rhodes for giving me the opportunity come home to Akron to continue my career," Jones said. "My staff and I are very appreciative of the support we received on and off campus in our quest to help our student-athletes become 'Smarter Students, Stronger Athletes and Better People.'  We wish the current Zips the very best and truly appreciate the support of all of our former players and alumni who have been such a huge part of the Zips' softball program over the past 13 years."Â
